The simple palette of familiar materials all comes back to trying to achieve that feeling of family, of being a nice suburban area to live in, and not to be too urbanised, because, at the end of the day, this is still a neighbourhood street. Using brick and profiled iron brings it back into the context of the suburban house – it’s also a nod to the history of the area, which was known for manufacturing bricks and pottery. The mix of materials creates visual interest and also breaks up the mass of the buildings. The result is that it is not too overbearing for its smaller neighbours, or the neighbourhood overall.
Holly Street is a quiet, tree-lined walking street, close to many of the local schools and colleges. Avondale College is just across the street and UNITEC is no more than a 10-minute bike ride, with the centre of New Lynn a similar distance in the opposite direction. Just a few houses down from Kōtuku’s site are a cycle/walking track that connects to Heron Park, which borders the estuary out to the harbour. At the other end of Holly Street is Avondale Racecourse, home to the famous Avondale Sunday Markets.
